What is narcissism?

Narcissism is something that is coming to light in recent times, due to the amount of emphasis being placed on narcissistic abuse and recovery. What exactly is it though? And how does it end up in abuse?

According to Oxford Dictionary (“narcissism | Definition of narcissism in English by Oxford Dictionaries”, 2017), it is defined as:

  • Excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one’s physical appearance.
  • Psychology: Extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one’s own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.
  • Psychoanalysis: Self-centredness arising from failure to distinguish the self from external objects, either in very young babies or as a feature of mental disorder.

The term comes from Greek mythology, where Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water.
